Maryvale/Wexford Neighbourhoods
Maryvale lies south of Highway 401, with an industrial corridor to the east.
Maryvale and Wexford are separated by a diagonally running Canadian Pacific railway line.
Wexford continues south to a power line corridor just north of Eglinton.
Wexford began in the 1840's as a community at the Lawrence & Pharmacy Ave crossroads,
with a hotel owned by an immigrant from Wexford County, Ireland. In 1865, he added a post office in the hotel, he chose to call it Wexford.
Maryvale developed as part of the thriving Village of Ellesmere which grew along Ellesmere Road. The community is named for the Maryvale farm (which bred race horses) located where the Maryvale Publc Schools is now located.
By the 1950s this area was becoming urbanized and by the 1970s was fully developed.
Today's Wexford is a multi-cultural neighbourhood with diverse shops and restaurants catering to African, Caribbean, East and West Indian, Mediterranean, Greek and Italian tastes.
Motorists can access the Don Valley Parkway via Eglinton or Lawrence Avenues, and are close to Highway 401 via Victoria Park or Warden.
TTC transit users have bus services along Eglinton, Lawrence which connect to the Yonge-University-Spadina subway line, and buses along Warden, Pharmacy (rush hour service),
and Victoria Park connect to stations on the Bloor-Danforth subway line
Schools
The community has 5 elementary schools, 1 Catholic elementary, 2 public high schools
and has Centennial Colleges Ashtonbee Campus on Eglinton and York University's Glendon Campus is east a few kilometers along Lawrence Avenue.
Shopping
The community has a number of neighbourhood plazas, but the larger malls are the Parkway Mall
(Ellesmere & Victoria Park), Victoria Terrace (Victoria Park & Lawrence),
Eglinton Square (at Victoria Park), and the area's largest, Golden Mile Mall (Eglinton west of Pharmacy). There are also a number of big box stores along Ellesmere east of Warden.
Recreation
Theses communities have lots of small parks, the larger Wexford park in the south, and a north-south power line corridor. The community has several tennis courts, and outdoor pool,
several baseball diamonds.
Homes
Maryvale's and Wexford's homes were largely built in the 1960s,
and have a mix of bungalows and 1-1/2-storey houses. There are highrises along Lawrence Avenue.
Housing in these neighbourhoods are in the low to low-medium price ranges.
